The city of Seville is preparing for an extraordinary event that will be etched in the memories of its residents and visitors: the Magna Procession of December 2024. This grand religious celebration will mark the conclusion of the 2nd International Congress of Brotherhoods and Confraternities, a gathering that brings together scholars, devotees, and curious onlookers to explore popular religiosity and its many manifestations. Over nearly 40 consecutive hours, the city will witness a series of unique processions featuring some of Seville's most venerated images, traversing the main streets of the city center to create an unparalleled experience of devotion and fervor.

Popular Religiosity in Action

The congress culminating in this procession focuses on studying and reflecting on popular piety. Seville, with its rich brotherhood tradition, serves as an ideal epicenter for such analysis, but theory comes alive through practice: fervor is felt in the streets, in the murmur of a crowd, or in the reverent silence as an image passes by. The Magna will therefore serve as a living expression of what the congress's presentations attempt to unravel: the intimate relationship between the people and their devotions.

A Shared Devotion

In this unprecedented event, the most venerated images from Seville and its province will come together, showcasing the richness and diversity of Andalusian faith. Among the stars of the procession will be the Virgin of the Kings, patroness of Seville and its Archdiocese; the Great Power, known as the “Lord of Seville”; and iconic figures like the Esperanza de Triana, Esperanza Macarena, and the Cristo del Cachorro. Joining them will be three patronesses from the province: Our Lady of Setefilla (Lora del Río), Our Lady of Valme (Dos Hermanas), and Our Lady of Consolation (Utrera).

This parade of faith and tradition will travel through the streets of the Andalusian capital, reinforcing the bond between city and province through a shared spiritual and artistic heritage.

The Order of the Magna

The Magna Procession of Seville will begin on December 7 at 3:00 PM with the departure of the Virgin of Esperanza de Triana, followed an hour later by The Cachorro. The other images will then join in, following the planned order: Virgin of the Kings, Great Power, Virgin of Setefilla, Virgin of Valme, Virgin of Consolation, The Cachorro, and finally, The Macarena. The processions will continue until 4:50 AM on December 9, when the Esperanza Macarena is brought back.

The Legacy of Devotion

Each of the images participating in the Magna has a rich history to share. From the connection of the Virgin of Valme with Ferdinand III to the miracles attributed to the Virgin of Consolation, these figures are much more than sacred artworks: they are living symbols of the faith and identity of their communities.

The closing procession of the 2nd International Congress of Brotherhoods and Confraternities will undoubtedly be a milestone in the religious history of Seville. This extraordinary event will allow Sevillians and visitors alike to experience the intensity of devotion up close, in a celebration that unites past and present under the gaze of the city's and province's most beloved images.
