If there's a corner in Seville that leaves no one indifferent, it's the Metropol Parasol, better known as Las Setas de Sevilla (The Mushrooms of Seville). This striking wooden structure has become one of the most photographed and visited spots in the city. Its avant-garde design contrasts with the classical surroundings of the historic centre and has sparked mixed reactions since its inauguration, but the truth is that today it stands as a symbol of modern and creative Seville.

Whether you're visiting the city for the first time or returning after previous stays, this urban icon is definitely worth adding to your itinerary. And to make the experience unforgettable, we recommend staying at Gravina 51, a 4-star boutique hotel in the centre of Seville, just a few minutes’ walk away.

A project that transformed the heart of Seville

Located in the Plaza de la Encarnación, the Metropol Parasol was designed by German architect Jürgen Mayer as part of an ambitious urban regeneration plan. The area had been neglected for decades following the demolition of the old market in the 1970s. During the early stages of construction, important Roman and Andalusian archaeological remains were uncovered, which influenced the final design of the project.

The result was a large, organic structure made of micro-laminated wood and concrete, with curved shapes resembling giant mushrooms — hence its popular nickname. Measuring 150 metres long and 70 metres wide, it’s one of the largest wooden structures in the world. Beyond its striking appearance, the Metropol Parasol combines architecture, archaeology, commerce, and leisure, making it a truly unique multifunctional space.

What to see beneath and above the Setas de Sevilla?

The building is divided into five levels, allowing visitors to enjoy a range of experiences in one place. Below ground is the Antiquarium, an archaeological museum that houses remains from Roman and Almohad Seville, including mosaics, houses, and an old fish-salting factory. It's a fascinating space for those eager to connect with the city's deepest roots.

At street level is the market, reviving the area's commercial tradition with a modern look. Here you can buy fresh produce or simply wander through the colourful stalls.

Climb to the top floor to access the elevated plaza and the spectacular panoramic walkway, a 250-metre-long path offering 360º views over the city. From here, you can see iconic landmarks such as La Giralda, the cathedral, the Church of the Annunciation, and the Alamillo Bridge. Visit at sunset to enjoy one of the best moments of the day, when Seville’s rooftops are bathed in golden light and the city slowly begins to glow.

The bright and dark sides of an urban icon

As with many groundbreaking projects, the Metropol Parasol didn’t escape controversy. Its futuristic aesthetic divided opinions among locals and heritage experts, who questioned how well it fit into such a traditional setting. The choice of wood as the main material also raised concerns about its durability in Seville’s hot climate, where high temperatures can cause expansion and water infiltration.

Despite the initial criticism, time has softened perspectives. Today, Las Setas de Sevilla are one of the city’s most visited spots and have become a symbol of its openness to modernity without losing touch with its history. The space also regularly hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and open-air activities.
